What is "Compounding" and Why is it Important?

Drug compounding has been in use since man discovered that certain plants, or chemicals, could effectively treat many diseases.  In fact, many of today’s modern drugs are derived from products used by the earliest physicians and pharmacists.  Before the advent of pharmaceutical companies, virtually all medications were compounded by the “pharmacist”. Now, the majority of pharmaceutical products are available commercially as prepared pills, capsules, injections, gels, creams, and troches.

Compounding provides a means for the pharmacist to precisely make pharmaceutical agents that are not available commercially. Sometimes this is because the market is small, thus not appropriate for major manufacturers or a person needs a specialized dose not commercially available.

Burman’s highly trained pharmacists compound many products requested by physicians for their patients. Progesterone is a good example of a medication that we compound.  Progesterone is prescribed to support endometrial development and is available as injections, suppositories, gels, compounded, and creams. Many times we compound progesterone to achieve the exact dosage that an individual infertility patient needs.

Another example of a product that we compound is PLO Gel for pain. It is one of the more unique dosage forms available to a compounding pharmacist. It is a penetrating ointment base that allows a medication to be carried through the skin for local absorption.

Burman’s pharmacist can compound most medications that your physician requests so please don’t hesitate to contact us.
